We've had some beautiful days but unpredictable with wonderful sunshine interspersed with wind and rain. Here are a few high lights some of which I will put on in more detail later.
One of the windiest days I've been out in - over 50mph on Ard Crags. Joan and Margaret were both bracing themselves against the wind and moments later Margaret's hat made off into the distance never to be seen again!
Another day of glorious skies! Walking from Portinscale a great 12 mile circuit took in Rowling End, Causey Pike, Scar Crags, Sail, Crag Hill and Wandope. A steep descent via Wandope's east ridge enabled us to return by Rigg Beck and back along by Newlands Beck. By the way this footpath is now open again after long awaited repairs following the 2009 floods.
The main difference is that with private clients there is some scope for choosing the day whereas with the KR programme you just hope for good conditions on the day fixed in the programme.
Anyway, the forecast for last Monday was pretty reasonable and six of us plus Skye took the bus over to Glenridding. Fairly low cloud and a bit of a shower as we climbed by Myers Beck and no sign of the summit of Helvellyn as we reached Birkhouse Moor and approached the Hole in the Wall.

But as we left the footpath to follow the grassy first part of the ridge we could see views down into Grisedale and the cloud was swirling around Striding Edge giving tantalising glimpses of the rocky ridge to come.

still misty as we started along the ridge

Once we reached the ridge proper the cloud was lifting, the rock was drying and we were able to enjoy the scrambling. Some of the group were faster and more confident than others so I coaxed the tail enders while others went at their own speed waiting for the rest of us at convenient places. Congratulations are due to all - no one 'cheated' and walked along the path on the side of the ridge!!
Bit chilly and breezy on the summit, a photo by the cairn and then a well earned lunch in the shelter- this is Skye's favourite time of the day especially on Helvellyn where he can disappear to other sides of the shelter and scrounge tit bits without me seeing and telling him off!

There we were views in all directions too though brightest and clearest down to Ullswater in the north east. After feasting our stomachs and our eyes we followed the clear path down to the west reaching the valley at Wythburn Church and catching the bus back to Keswick.
My daughter was staying earlier in July and since I have a KR walk up Grasmoor on 13th August we decided to recce a route up it that I haven't done for at least 10 years - the west ridge from Lanthwaite Green by Crummock Water. I remembered it as being a scramble and wasn't sure whether it would be suitable for a group.

looking down to Crummock Water - we came up the ridge on the right

In fact it was a lovely route with any scrambling easily avoidable and even our friend Tim who is not at all keen on scrambling thoroughly enjoyed it. The start looks rather intimidating with steep grass and then scree; in practice the steep grass is short and the scree is avoidable on little paths up through the heather and you soon reach a delightful heathery ridge with little rocky steps. In no time it seems you step up onto sheep mown grass and stroll gently to the top.
Many thanks to Pete and Lyn for choosing to go to Scotland to bag some more Munroes in this glorious weather. It gave me the chance to go over to Langdale and climb the Crinkles and Bowfell on one of those days when the breeze on the tops made it far pleasanter to be up high rather than in the valley..

We took the steep but well made path up beside Browney Gill towards Red Tarn. A well earned rest gave us the opportunity to turn round and enjoy the view of Langdale Pikes with little figures climbing the crags above the Old DG.

The route across the Crinkles ridge was super with a pleasant breeze and lovely dry rock. Skye earned his scrambling colours by managing the Difficult Step which was more than some of the humans did! Dillbert and the rest of us took the short diversion to the right of the crag and soon joined Skye on the top. No photo of his amazing feat I'm afraid - I was too busy being poised to catch him if he fell off!

Three Pikes is really a high level circuit of Hobcarton Gill, starting and finishing in Whinlatter Forest. Yesterday we were soon in low cloud with a bit of rain. By the time we had climbed up to Ladyside Pike or Lady's Seat if you prefer the rain had stopped and we just got damp from the cloud - a good thing since Chloe's waterproof seemed to have seen better days!
Care was needed on the scramble up to Hobcarton Pike (or Hopegill Head) since the rock was slippery in the wet but lunch was the reward. Up till then we had seen no one but as we walked along to Grisedale Pike we met a few other brave souls facing up to the cloud and increasing wind.

Then it was down over Hobcarton End into the forest and through the woods down to Braithwaite with 5 minutes to spare before the bus arrived for the return to Keswick.
As Roy commented "Why don't more people come out with you? They would be guaranteed of an excellent walk whatever the conditions with no worries about route finding and knowing that they would be sure to learn something new about the Lake District. We've been coming as a family since the children were quite young; they are now in their 20s but we still find we all get our best days walking in the Lake District with KR"

He is quite right; our local knowledge means that we choose the best routes up and down; we can change the route if the weather turns; add an interesting extra bit if there is time before the bus comes; try to keep the wind on our backs and find a sheltered corner for lunch - and our dogs provide constant entertainment!Cathy Colamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11952747019773215858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-684096277786561058.post-34228186551202177412012-04-06T16:19:00.000+01:002012-04-06T16:19:24.955+01:00More winter! From Bessyboot the distant view of Helvellyn was of a white ridge all the way north to Clough Head and it was white across to the Langdales too. Skiddaw was already losing its white covering which at breakfast had reached almost to the valley. First lunch on Rosthwaite Cam was followed by circling round the Great Hollow with views across Langstrath to Eagle Crag and High Raise. Here we met the only people we saw all day - two fellas planning to camp the night in Upper Eskdale. No other footsteps either so no one else had been our way. Luckily for Ron they had found his spare camera filters on Bessyboot which he was totally unaware of having lost!
From the view point of Combe Head we crossed through the tarns to Glaramara. The usual scramble facing north was still coated with snow and ice and not having come prepared for winter climbing we found an alternative scramble round the corner taking us directly to the summit. Second lunch sat with our backs against warm rock and we started down Thorneythwaite Fell into a strong NE head wind and gradually dropped below the snow line.
I hope not. Anyway, the sun shone on a beautiful Lake District. The air was crystal clear giving wonderful distant views and the ground underfoot was frozen so we could ignore the paths and walk wherever we liked.
Anne took some persuading to drive over from Leeds on Saturday morning the conditions were so horrid but she was rewarded with an unmissable day on Sunday. We drove up Borrowdale under a clear blue sky and parked below Thorneythwaite Fell. As we approached the ridge the sheep busy feeding took no more notice of Skye than he did of them. As we climbed the ridge the view behind us gave us plenty of excuses to stop and gaze. A green Borrowdale with snowcapped Skiddaw in the distance.
After a quick coffee in a sheltered hollow we headed across to Glaramara. The frozen water allowed us to take a direct route across the wet area to our south and pick up a snowy ramp up to the eastern ridge of Glaramara. After taking in each of the summits we headed southwards to Allen Crags exploring several tarns on the way which would normally have been too wet to do. The ice, however, was much too thin for walking on the tarns, and even on the streams care and speed were needed at times!
After Allen Crags we soon dropped below the snowline and cloud was beginning to build up. We've had snow on the tops around Keswick but none in the valley. On Wednesday Barry and I drove over to Grasmere to find snow. Even in the valley as we walked up the Easedale Road there was ice and snow under foot. When we left the road and crossed over the bridge we donned our microspikes which allowed us to walk without worrying about the surface under foot.
If you are lucky the gorse will be in flower too and even the hawthorn.
Our walk during the Festival in May will include not only the walk up Rannerdale itself but also the stroll along the ridge of Rannerdale Knott and round the lake shore of Crummock Water. The exact route will depend on the conditions on the day because the way off Rannerdale Knott, though short is quite steep and can be slippery in the wet.
This superb walk threads an almost untrod way over an area of fell which many people think they know well. Loads of you will have walked up to Sty head Tarn and past Sprinkling Tarn to Esk Hause but how many have explored the fell beyond Sprinkling Tarn? You may gave plodded over the boulders above Esk Hause to the top of Great End but how many have realised that the forboding cliffs of the north face of Great End hide a delightful ridge with easy scrambling?

Here are a few photos from an ascent of Great End by this route in 2009.
Forecast was for showers but I was delighted to have 10 walkers for my walk yesterday. We all enjoyed a short sharp climb from Rosthwaite into Johnny's Wood which is full of mossy oaks above a carpet of grass and bracken. Branches overhead sheltered us from the worst of the showers which seemed to have gone by the time we emerged from the shelter of the trees to climb the grassy path through the bracken to the summit of High Doat above Seatoller. A lowly 283m high this is a superb viewpoint. Even today there were glimpses of Great Gable and Great End as well as a super view up Coombe Gill to Glaramara.
As showers continued to scud across we crossed to the Allerdale Ramble and walked down Borrowdale towards Castle Crag where we lunched in the shelter of a dry stone wall. Just 6 joined me in the ascent of Castle Crag on rather damp rock. After enjoying the superb views from the summit we descended to meet the others and return to Rosthwaite in perfect time for the 3pm bus back to Keswick
In waterproofs by the time we reached Easedale Tarn and in cloud by the time we got to the top of Blea Crag. A short stop for lunch and then as we resumed our walk along the ridge ......... as if by magic the steep cliff of Harrison Stickle appeared through the mist.
A steep but well graded stone path leads up beside Stanger Gill with wonderful views back down to Stonethwaite and the Borrowdale Valley. Then a tiny grassy path threads its way to the source of the stream and a final scramble to the top of Bessyboot.
Two I were expecting because they had been in contact by e-mail and the others turned up on the day having seen our programme at the Information Centre in Keswick.

To ensure we didn't end up with a rush to catch the last bus from Seatoller after our walk we took cars down to Seathwaite so we were on the fell by 10am. Everywhere is very dry at the moment and there was very little water in the streams. We followed the west bank of Sty Head Gill with a bit of a scramble above Taylor Force and were able to climb the slabs in the stream for some of the way without getting wet - apart from Mick who slid in at one point but he soon dried off!

All of Keswick Rambles Walks went really well in spite of it being a really windy few days as you will see on the photos. That led to minor route changes but all walks went ahead and everyone enjoyed themselves and is looking forward with anticipation to next year's Festival.

Here are a few photos to give you a taste of this years walks

On Wednesday and Sunday I took groups up Catbells. Most people were new to walking in the Lake District and enjoyed the challenge of scrambling up the north ridge which was rather breezy although the wind didn't really hit us until we reached the summit. On Wednesday Derwentwater was rather choppy giving us somewhat damp rides across the Lake but on Sunday the waves were too big for the boats to go out and we had to use a taxi at the start of the walk and return to Keswick by bus. (gave us time for tea & cakes at Shepherd's Caf!)
Thursday was my biggest walk of the Festival with a group of 12 up Great Gable and it was the day with the best weather. We started up beside Sour Milk Gill into Gillercombe and then took off up the grass towards the Hanging Rock and up onto the ridge of Base Brown. The glorious views back down Borrowdale from Base Brown gave us every reason to stop and turn around but soon we were looking forward to Green Gable and Great Gable as well as across to Great End. There are so many superb views on this walk, the peaks we could see are too many to list. From the top of Gable we dropped down to Westmoreland Cairn to marvel at the view down Wasdale and onto the top Napes Ridge at our feet.

On Friday 20th May I have a walk along the ridge to the south west of Skiddaw - Ullock Pike, Longside Edge and Carlside. A delightful steady ascent from the toe of the ridge gives superb views down to Bassenthwaite Lake in one direction and across to Skiddaw in the other. From Carlside, rather than turning left and slogging up the scree to Skiddaw we'll turn right and go down towards Dodd whilst enjoying the views over Newlands and Keswick. From Dodd it's a zig zag down through the woods followed by a stroll across the fields back to Keswick. Rather less climbing than going all the way up Skiddaw (800m rather than 1000m) this walk gives you all the best bits of climbing Skiddaw without the scree!

Here are some photos from earlier trips on this walk to give you a feel for it. If you would like to go to the top of Skiddaw by this route Alison and Halle are taking a group up for Keswick Rambles onWednesday 18th May, also as part of KMF.
I love Catbells on a summer evening - but it will be busy, busy, busy at Easter, especially in this fantastic weather!

A small group joined me to cross Derwentwater in the launch. We got off at High Brundelhow rather than Hawes End which is the usual starting point for Catbells with extra boats laid on for Easter. This meant we could enjoy a quiet start to our walk through Brundelhow Woods with the bluebells just coming out. At the foot of Catbells we started to meet more people. However, much to my surprise, the climb up the Catbells ridge was a delight with so many families enjoying their adventure. Children love the scrambly route up and with everyone in holiday mood it was great to share their first real mountain.
We paused only briefly on the summit as about 100 people must have been picnicing there! Down to the col and on up to Maiden Moor was far quieter and we enjoyed our lunch with a super view into Borrowdale. From the top of Maiden Moor we returned to Bull Crag and down steep grass into Yewthwaite Combe - not another soul here. This way down is my favourite route off Maiden Moor except in summer when the bracken hides the path.
